Oman stops renewing work permits for expats above 60 years of age
MOL has implemented an administrative restriction preventing the issuance and renewal of work permits for expatriates aged 60 and above, effective 20 August 2026. Applications are automatically rejected through the MOL portal, with no standard exception process available. Exceptions are considered only in exceptional cases involving irreplaceable skills and require senior-level MOL intervention, with approvals potentially taking weeks. Employers are strongly advised to review affected positions and begin succession planning.

WPS Non-Compliance – Immediate Automatic Suspensions and Fines
MOL has intensified WPS enforcement, with companies now facing immediate suspension and fines for non-compliance. Suspended companies may be unable to issue new visas, renew existing visas, or access the MOL system. Clients are urged to urgently review their WPS status and ensure employee and salary details are accurate and compliant. Any discrepancies should be resolved immediately to avoid penalties and operational disruption.

Omanisation compliance remains a government priority, and MOL has intensified enforcement against companies failing to meet required ratios. Oman Launches the First Phase of Mandatory E-Invoicing
Oman has entered a major new phase in tax digitalisation with the rollout of its national e-invoicing system, Fawtara, beginning in August 2026. The first phase applies to selected large taxpayers, with the system expected to expand progressively to other VAT-registered businesses. Companies should review their accounting systems, invoice data, internal processes and technology readiness well before their implementation phase.

Oman’s Economy Records 2.6% Growth in the First Quarter of 2026
Oman’s economy grew by approximately 2.6% in real terms during the first quarter of 2026, according to reported economic data. The figures reflect continued economic activity and diversification efforts, although manufacturing and construction performance highlighted the importance of further strengthening non-oil productivity and investment. The World Bank has also projected 2.4% economic growth for Oman in 2026, with diversification remaining an important driver of future growth.
